Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple stands in the busy town of Ettumanoor, a short drive north of Kottayam, and is one of the great Shiva shrines of central Kerala. The Lord here, whom devotees fondly call Ettumanoorappan, is worshipped in a fierce and powerful aspect – yet for the people who come to him he is above all a caring protector, the one they pray to for health, courage and relief from illness.
Two things make the temple famous far beyond Kottayam. At the entrance burns the Valiya Vilakku, a huge oil lamp that devotees keep alight by pouring in sesame oil, and in the temple's keeping are the Ezhara Ponnana, the "seven and a half golden elephants", brought out for public darshan only during the annual festival in Kumbham. Visitors who love art also come for the old murals near the entrance, counted among the finest in Kerala.
The story goes that the asura Khara, a great devotee of Shiva, received three Shiva lingas after long penance. While carrying them south he set them down to rest, and they would not move again. He handed them to the sage Vyaghrapada for worship: the one from his right hand is said to be at Vaikom, the one from his left hand at Ettumanoor, and the one he held at his neck at Kaduthuruthy. Devotees still believe that praying at all three temples on the same day, before the noon pooja, brings great blessing.
Two explanations are told for the name. One links it to "maan", a deer – in a legend Khara took the form of a deer and the Lord lifted it up. The other reads it as "ettu mana ooru", the place of eight Namboothiri households. Temple tradition also says that the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa worshipped here, and that Adi Sankaracharya composed the Soundarya Lahari during a stay at Ettumanoor.
The present temple, with its gopuram and walls, was rebuilt around the 1540s. Its circular sreekovil has a copper-covered roof, and a golden flagstaff crowned with a Nandi stands in front. The murals of the 16th century, above all the painting of Shiva's Pradosha dance, are treasured as landmarks of Kerala mural art, and the wood carvings show scenes from the Ramayana and the Bhagavatam. The golden elephants are traditionally linked to the rulers of Travancore in the 18th century, though accounts of how and why they were offered differ. Today the temple is run by the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Traditional Kerala dress is expected. Men usually wear a mundu and remove their shirt before entering the inner temple; women wear a saree, set-mundu, a long skirt with blouse or a churidar. Rules can change, so please follow the temple's current notices.
By the temple's tradition, entry to the inner temple is for Hindus; please follow the temple's current notices. Leave footwear outside, and do not take photographs inside unless the staff allow it.
Early mornings are calmest. Mondays, Shivaratri and the Kumbham festival – especially the eighth and tenth days, when the golden elephants are shown – bring very large crowds. Many pilgrims visit Ettumanoor, Vaikom and Kaduthuruthy on the same morning, so plan to start early if you want to do the same.
Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple – the third of the three Khara temples, about 15 km away
Vaikom Mahadeva Temple – on the shore of Vembanad lake, about 25 km away
Kumarakom – backwaters and bird sanctuary, about 20 km away
Kottayam town – about 12 km south
